This academic year was a highly successful one in Cambridge for the Chinese New Year Trust committee. Two major events were organised – the Chinese New Year Charity Run and the Chinese New Year Ball. The Charity Run took place in October, and saw over 100 runners take to the streets of Cambridge on a cold and windy Sunday morning. A total sum of over £7,000 was raised, and we are very grateful to each participant for their contribution. The theme of this year’s ball was Moonlit Shanghai, a night where over 250 people were transported to the glamorous and decadent world of 1920s Shanghai. Guests were treated to a champagne reception with jazz band, before an evening of delicious Chinese cuisine, fine wine and incredible performances. This was followed by post-show entertainment in the form of a casino, chocolate fountain and more. The night was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended, and the charity auction raised around £2,500. Every member of the committee has done a fantastic job in contributing towards the organisation of two such excellent events, helping to raise a total of over £18,000 for CNYTrust. We look forward to many future successes!
Yuhan Gao, President Cambridge University Chinese New Year Trust 2013-2014
CNY Trust helps the volunteers with their financial problems and allows us in turn to help migrant children who lack access to better education. All the volunteers devoted themselves into helping the migrant children. In the past year, there were about 40 volunteers in our association.15 of them received the CNYTrust scholarship. During last year, every week, we spent almost 2 hours with the migrant children, helping them with their homework or giving them interesting lessons – it takes us around 2 hours to get to the migrant community since the transportation links are not very good.
This year, after the interviews, there are an additional 12 students who will receive the CNYTrust scholarship and another over 10 students have volunteered to help, even though they were not awarded a scholarship. So, this year, we have more than 20 volunteers already and all of them are committed to making a difference.More and more students want to join us to help the little kids for free. They think this activity is the most helpful activity they have ever done before and they keep telling their friends it is something useful not only for their university life, but also for the whole society. They regard it as the best way to realize their own value.
All of the volunteers believe that each of them is a single spark, but a single spark can start a prairie fire. Their efforts have the power to make more and more people notice these migrant children and to help the children to obtain better education and make more friends. That is the volunteers’ dream and also is CNYTrust’s dream.
Thank you CNYTrust for giving me this opportunity – this activity has changed our lives!
洪扬, on behalf of CNYTrust Scholars 2013-2014
In 2013 CNYTrust continued to inspire, education and inform – all whilst having a great time. Here are some of the things we achieved in 2013:
- We sponsored a record number of scholars at Capital Normal University in Beijing to teach at our selected migrant schools
- Our generous group of donors who sponsor students directly continued to grow – these type of scholarships have a unique impact on our scholars, who have an opportunity to learn, seek advice and build a connection with their donor within the safety net of the CNYTrust
- Extremely positive feedback from the migrant schools we support in Beijing and the launch of projects to consider new schools in 2014
- One of our Trustees, Adrian Li, raised over USD 10,000 for CNYTrust through his participation in the Busselton Iron Man event in December 2013
And there is plenty to look forward to in 2014. We are in the final stages of recruiting the Capital Normal University Scholars Class of 2014 and our Cambridge University society looks set to report another very successful 2013-2014 term. Importantly, we are progressing on our 2012/13 initiative that saw the formation of an independent Capital Normal University Committee that will have increasing control over the running of our migrant teaching program.
None of our continued progress could be achieved without the generous support of our donors, our selfless Scholars and all of our volunteers – we owe you all a great deal.
We hope the year of the Horse will bring much more progress and success to the CNYTrust. For any questions, please get in contact with Alex (firstname.lastname@example.org).
The CNYTrust Committee 2012-13 gladly reports that the Society has hosted another successful Charity Run, raising RMB40,000 for the Trust despite some very challenging weather. Preparing for the CNY Ball on 16 Feb 2013, the Committee has lined up some exciting new features for our guests, including sending postcards back home for guests, instant polarized cameras and most importantly, a charity auction. Meanwhile, the Committee is also working hard to promote the Ball to a wider student group. The Committee is on course to raise RMB120,000 this year. It is a great honour to contribute to the philanthropic work at CNYTrust and we are devoted to organising an amazing year at Cambridge.
Cambridge University CNYTrust Committee 2012-13
A big warm welcome to our lastest and greatest Scholars at Beijing’s Capital Normal University. This year, the CNYTrust sponsored a record 13 new Scholars under our Capital Normal University Scholarship Program. Our Scholarship helps these students to manage their University fees and, more importantly, our Scholars commit to teaching in migrant schools for the duration of their Scholarship. The majority of our students are themselves aspiring teachers, however, what all of our Scholars and the CNYTrust share in common is a universal desire to help improve access and quality of education for migrant children in rural China.
We were delighted to have received a record number of applications this year – our students, Scholars and donors are crucial for our mission if we are to meaningfully impact migrant children in China and we are eternally grateful.
A special thanks also to Edmund, who graciously agreed to personally sponsor two additional Scholars this year. With a donor base like this, the Trustees see CNYTrusts’ future as extremely bright! For information on personal Scholarships, please contact email@example.com.
Congratulations again to our latest Scholars: 薛鸿悦，丛爽，宋静雯，陶健，季琳琳，刘倩，吴迪，郝月，任静雅，姜莉，洪扬，李欣，葛俏丽, and we hope that you we will be able to read their profiles in due course.
In the meantime, best wishes from the Committee for a wonderful Christmas, and if you haven’t already – buy your ticket for this years Chinese New Year Ball in Cambridge!
It is amazing how fast time passes…Another year, another committee, and lots more success for CNYTrust. But we are still eager to push on, raise more funds and help our students in China even more! This year is in fact very special, because our very first batch of Capital Normal University Scholars (2008 intake) will be graduating and pursuing the careers in education. It really seems like only yesterday that we first interviewed them – Donna and Alex will hopefully attend their graduations, so we should have some photos to post here later in the year! The Cambridge Team had a great year, and on the ground in China we are working hard to match their efforts! This year, we have decided to expand our Capital Normal University Scholarship program – we are looking to add up to 10 Scholars, which will be our largest intake since beginning the program! We are also hoping to deepen our relationship with Dandelion Migrant School.
A VERY special thanks goes out to Grace, a new donor who we met this year, as we worked together with her to directly subsidise education costs for 12 children at the school. We hope that more donors will come forward and participate in a similar manner – the students are hugely appreciative.
As always, we are thinking of new and innovative ways to make the lasting and positive impact we aspire to. Moreover, we love to listen to your ideas, so please get in touch if you would like to talk!
Another very successful year for the Cambridge University CNYTrust Society! Through are annual Charity Run and Charity Ball we raised over RMB100,000. A big thank you to all our supporters – donors, helpers, Cambridge University, sponsors and, of course the Society Committee! At this time, we are proud to have chosen a new Committee for the 2012-2013 year – below are the names of the esteemed individuals who have been elected! Now it is time for the current Committee to say good-bye, and buckle down for our exams! It has been an honour and a privilege to be part of the CNYTrust and we look forward to next years’ activities!
